Masuo Ikeda Revealed: A Retrospective

Profile

1934年   February 23, born in Mukden (now Shenyang) in Japanese-controlled Manchuria as the oldest son of Kakujiro and Satoko Ikeda.
1952年   Graduates from Nagano Prefectural Nagano Kita High School. Aimed to major in oil painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, but failed to gain admission.
1960年   Exhibits Portrait of Woman, Woman, Animals and Woman at the 2nd International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo, winning the prestigious Minister of Education, Science and Culture's Award.
1961年   Exhibits Festival in the Moon, Big Woman, and Queen at the Young Artists’ International Biennale in Paris, winning the Prix d’ Excellence. Holds first exhibition of copperplate prints at Shinobazu Gallery.
1962年   Wins the Governor of Tokyo’s Award at the 3rd International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo.
1964年   Wins the National Museum of Modern Art Award at the 4th International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo.
1965年   Solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York
1966年   Exhibits 28 copperplate prints, including Lady Making Up, Rose is Rose, Spring and Springs, and A Certain Relation at the 33rd Venice Biennale, winning the Grand Prize in Printmaking.
1967年   Receives the 17th Minister of Education, Science and Culture’s Encouragement Prize.
1969年   Exhibits Self Portrait from Budapest, Sole of Shoes, and Half of Marilyn at the 8th International Exhibition of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, winning the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts award.
1977年   Receives the 77th Akutagawa Award for his novel, Offering in the Aegean.
1979年   Completes Dedicato al mare Egeo—the film adaptation of Offering in the Aegean—as director in addition to writing the original novel and screenplay. Shows the film at the Cannes Film Festival.
1980年   Announces his marriage to Yoko Sato at a reception to mark their new start together.
1982年   Relocates to Kaiko-cho in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture.
1983年   Tries his hand at studio pottery at the Gandenji pottery in Minami Izu.
1986年   Establishes the Manyo Studio in Shimota, Atami.
1993年   Constructs a new ceramics studio, Masuo Happo Pottery in Masuho, Yamanashi Prefecture.
1997年   Dies suddenly on March 8, at the age of sixty-three.
