昨年9月11日のアメリカ同時多発テロの後、いたずらメールの一種が流布した。貿易センタービルに激突した飛行機の便名とされる英数字をMSワードでタイプし、Wingdingsという絵文字フォントに変換すると、二つの高層ビルに激突する飛行機と骸骨、ユダヤの星が現れる、というものである。
インドのアーティスト、ジティーシュ・カラトはこのメールに着目し、"Under Destruction"という作品を提案した。ウェブからワード書類をダウンロードすると、意味不明な、どこか不吉な絵文字の羅列が現れる。指示に従ってそのフォントを変換すると、祖国インドへの忠誠を謳った文章が現れるのである。インド国民なら誰もが知っている、広く流布した文章である。緊張の高まる国際社会において、愛国心というものの二面性、それがしかも米マイクロソフト社の世界標準ともいえるワープロソフトによって伝達されるというアイロニー。またあえて展覧会場とは異なるサイバー・スペースで展開することで、より広い社会への問題提起が目論まれている。


One unsolicited e-mail circulated after September 11 of 2001. The content of the e-mail was something like this: the receiver types in the flight number of the airplane that crashed into the World Trade Center building using MS Word, and changes the fonts into Wingdings format. Then an image of the airplanes crashing into the two skyscrapers, a skull and the Star of David appears on the PC screen.

The Indian artist, Jitish Kallat, taking interest in this incident, proposed to create a work titled, “Under Destruction.” In this work, the audience is first download a Word file from the website. They open a file that contains lines of ominous characters. Then they are instructed to change the font style to reveal the fact the mysterious message was in fact the Indian Nation Pledge. Any Indian national would know this pledge, as it is recited throughout the country. In the increasingly intense global society, we can see the irony in how the two-faced patriotism is disseminated by a product of an American global standard corporation, Microsoft, Inc. This work is an attempt to present the artist’s concern in the cyberspace, where he will reach a wider audience in the society.
