Raymond Pettibon: Plots Laid Thick
2002.5.25 [Sat] - 8.15 [Thu]
SOLO/S

Flyer

Raymond Pettibon (1957-) is a contemporary artist representative of the West Coast of the United States. Pettibon is known for his drawings in which images derived from examples of mass culture such as manga and television are combined with text extracted from diverse examples of literature, resulting in a subtle relationship between the two. Today, the medium of drawing is no longer regarded as a preliminary step to painting but has achieved a position as a method of expression relevant to contemporary art, and Pettibon's contribution cannot be ignored.

Pettibon's installation of drawings as part of the international exhibition "Dokumenta11" which is being held in Kassel, Germany is also receiving critical acclaim.

Pettibon's "fictions", as he calls his work, draw from a variety of sources: social satire, from Goya's engravings to Honore Daumier's vignettes, mass culture, television, magazines and comics. The texts in his drawings are inspired by literary sources ranging from Marcel Proust, Henry James, the Bible, William Blake and John Ruskin, to pulp novels and magazines.

Pettibon visited Japan at the end of June 2002 and created a mural at this Gallery during his visit. The exhilarating strokes of the brush, resembling water gushing out a fountain, and the delicate text wildly traverse the 30 meters of wall space in the corridor. The addition of this drawing makes this exhibition, already featuring over 500 of the artist's works, even more extensive.
