The JAM: Tokyo-London exhibition features 43 young artists and groups from the street cultures of London and Tokyo who are producing ground-breaking work in a range of media including fashion, graphic design, photography, fine art and music. This exhibition is the Tokyo version of JAM: Tokyo-London held at the Barbican Art Gallery in London from May to July 2001. (Needless to say, this is not simply the London exhibition on tour. The larger exhibition space and the addition of more recent examples of street culture make this Tokyo exhibition an updated version of the London exhibition, with a larger number of exhibits. This JAM: Tokyo-London exhibition offers an even more comprehensive range of work.)
The concept behind the exhibition comes from the term "jam session" used in music, and visitors to the exhibition will experience the energy created by this meeting of different genres and will be introduced to a diverse range of innovative approaches. While the focus is on the creativity of individual artists and design groups, the exhibition will convey both a comprehensive image of contemporary lifestyles in Tokyo and London and a sense of the excitement and energy of the pop and street cultures of the two cities. As a result, the experience of visitors to the JAM: Tokyo-London exhibition will be like walking through a magazine.
