Black&White
Forms and lines from the Terada Collection

2000.5.27[Sat] - 2000.7.20[Thu]

The works in the Terada Collection, housed at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, were collected by Terada Kotaro, one of the joint owners of Tokyo Opera City, who has based his collection on the themes "an oriental abstractionism" or "black and white".

According to Mr Terada, "In the old days, movies were the only form of entertainment, and these were in black and white. When color was introduced into movies, I didn't think these were at all beautiful, and instead it was the world of black and white that began to appear beautiful to me". He is drawn to the movement in the relationship between form and line and expression and non-expression that result when the limited means of expression have been pushed to the limits.

Oil paintings, prints and three-dimensional works in which black and white is the principle means of expression have been selected from the Terada Collection for this Exhibition. The main artists whose work is being exhibited include Nambata Tatsuoki, Nambata Fumio, Lee Ufan, Yamada Masaaki, Tsuchiya Kimio, Akiyama Yo, Yamada Hikaru and Nishimura Ryohei.

The absence of color in these works emphasizes, and enables us to recognize once again, the beauty of form, the sense of motion in line drawing and the sense of three dimensionality and light and shade on the canvas.
