Selected Works from the Terada Collection, Part 2
2000.3.3 [Fri] - 2000.5.14 [Sun] |

The Terada Collection held by the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery was amassed by Terada Kotaro, one of the joint operators of the Tokyo Opera City project. Prompted by his sympathy with the cultural initiative of Tokyo Opera City, Mr. Terada began collecting works of art with the express aim of helping the project, and the artworks in his possession are held by this gallery in the form of a well-organized collection. Focusing mainly on Japanese artists of the post-war period, the collection is comprised of over 2,400 individual works, embracing categories ranging from oil paintings, nihon-ga, tempera, water-colors, prints and drawings to sculpture, by a total of over 300 artists. The core of the Terada Collection, from which its unique character derives, consists of over 500 works by Nambata Tatsuoki, filled with a quintessentially-Japanese lyricism, and his second son and artistic equal, Nambata Fumio, whose career was cut tragically short by his early death.
This exhibition, entitled "Selected Works from the Terada Collection, Part 2" -- continuing on from "Selected Works from the Terada Collection, Part 1", the Gallery's inaugural exhibition that opened in September last year -- offers another selection of works from the Gallery's permanent holdings. Part 2 will feature a number of the Terada Collection's many large pictures in the traditional Japanese style, in scroll format. These works offer the viewer a window into the world of Japanese spirituality, rooted in Japan's own natural terrain, that also forms one of the collection's unifying themes. The collection's principal theme of Eastern abstractionism is reflected in a number of abstract works by Japanese and South Korean artists, all informed by a characteristically Eastern aesthetic sensibility.
Through works by Nambata Tatsuoki, Nambata Fumio and other paintings integral to the character of the Terada Collection, this exhibition presents the viewer with a unique cross-section of contemporary art, shaped by the collector's discerning eye.
