Selected Works from the Terada Collection: Part 1 The Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery's Terada Collection was put together by Terada Kotaro, one of the operators of Tokyo Opera City. To mark the Art Gallery's opening, the Terada Gallery on Floor 4, the gallery where the permanent Terada Collection is housed, is exhibiting "Selected Works from the Terada Collection: Part 1." Consisting of approximately 2,400 works, mainly by post-war Japanese artists, the Terada Collection includes oil paintings, nihon-ga, tempera, watercolors, prints, drawings, sculpture, and other media. The current exhibition introduces 90 of these pieces, mainly two dimentional works.
Works by one of Japan's best known abstract painters, Nambata Tatsuoki (1905-1997), and by his second son, Nambata Fumio (1941-1974) are the backbone of the collection. More than 300 works by Tatsuoki and more than 250 by Fumio are included, making the Terada Collection one of the largest and best collections of works by Nambata Tatsuoki and Fumio, father and son. Representative works by both Tatsuoki and Fumio have been carefully selected for the current exhibition, acting as an introduction to their works. The Selected Works from the Terada Collection: Part 1 exhibition looks at aspects such as oriental abstract art, one of the themes pursued in assembling the collection, and also at several works that are somehow reminiscent of traditional Japanese scenery and at works that give a feel for the taste of Terada Kotaro, the individual collector who put the collection together, all seen through the richly individualistic nature of the collection.
