チョン・キョンファ（ヴァイオリン）、チョン・ミョンファ（チェロ）、チョン・ミョンフン（ピアノ）から成るチョン・トリオが、初めての日本ツアーを行ないます。3人の兄、チョン・ミョングン氏に、トリオについて、7人きょうだいのチョン・ファミリーについて、紹介いただきました。
 チョン ･トリオの成り立ちは、1958年に、チョン・カルテットがソウルの国立劇場において最初で最後の演奏会を行った時にさかのぼります。チョン ･カルテットのメンバーとは、フルートがミョンソ（長女）、ヴィオラがミョングン（私・長男）、チェロがミョンファ（次女）、そしてヴァイオリンがキョンファ（三女）でした。この演奏会で、アンサンブルの中でヴィオラが明らかに弱いということがわかり、私たちは、弟ミョンフンの成長を待つことにしました。彼はその時まだ5歳でしたが、すでに天才を示し始めていたのです。
そして5年後、私たちが移り住んでいたワシントン州シアトル。チョン・トリオは家族の集う居間でデビューしました。私たちの両親は音楽の専門教育を受けてはいませんでしたが、本物の才能と平凡なそれとを見分ける天性の能力を持っていました。その彼らがトリオの演奏に心からの賛辞をおくったのです。こうしてチョン ･トリオは誕生しました。ミョンファ19歳、キョンファ15歳、ミョンフン10歳のときです。
このトリオが他のプロフェッショナルな室内楽グループと違うのは、幼い時から一緒に教育を受けてきたということです。もちろん、それぞれが自分のキャリアに集中し、しばしば世界各地で別々に勉強したり演奏活動をしたりしていましたが、スケジュールの許す限り、トリオとしてのレパートリーを練習し、演奏を行いました。演奏について議論を戦わせながら、互いを深く理解し、直感的に感じあってきたのです。最初の頃こそ2人の姉が弟を教えるという感じでしたが、共に成長するにつれ、技術的に高度なだけでなく、きょうだいならではの親密さを感じさせるユニークで温かさに満ちた音楽を作り出すようになっていきました。
ミョンフンが指揮者としての道を歩み始めた時、もうトリオの活動は続けられないかもしれないと思われました。しかし、ピアノへの愛情が、彼をトリオにとどまらせたのです。そして1995年、25年以上にわたって世界中で演奏を行い、数え切れないほどの思い出深いコンサートやレコーディングを行ってきました彼らは、ついに最後の演奏会を迎えることになりました。メンバーの多忙なスケジュールは、もはや彼ら自身が要求する演奏水準を維持していくための充分な共同作業を不可能にしてしまっていたからです。
それから10年経った今年、チョン ･トリオは初めて日本でコンサートを行います。彼らは日本のファンのために、そしていつも私たちに強い力とスピリットを与えてくれる、今年86歳になる母のために演奏します。そして、日本の皆さんがこのトリオを、単に熟達した音楽家としてだけではなく、人はみな音楽を通して近づくことができるというメッセージを届けたいと願うファミリーとして見てくださることを心から願っています。

The Chung Trio
|
The genesis of the Chung Trio dates back to 1958 when the Chung Quartet gave its first and last concert at the National Theatre in Seoul. The Chung Quartet members were Myung So, flute, Myung Kun (myself), viola, Myung Wha, cello, and Kyung Wha, violin. The concert proved that the viola was unmistakably the weak link in the ensemble, and we all decided to wait for my little brother, Myung Whun, who at the age of five had already begun to show his genius, to grow up.
Five years later in Seattle, Washington, where we had moved from Seoul, the Chung Trio made its debut in the family living room. Although my parents were not professionally trained in music, they had natural ears and instinctive ability to discern between the mundane and the true talent; gave their wholehearted approval, and thus the Chung Trio was born.
Unlike other professional chamber music groups, the Chung Trio members trained together from the early ages; Myung Wha, 19, Kyung Wha, 15, Myung whun, 10. Each concentrated on the individual career, often studying and working in different parts of the world, but always got together regularly to work on the trio repertoire and performed as often as their schedules permitted. They often argued while working together, but understood each other intimately and felt each other intuitively. The sisters taught their little brother at the beginning but they grew up together musically and produced music that was not only technically of the highest level but uniquely woven with warmth that showed their sibling intimacy.
When Myung Whun began his conducting career, it was thought that he might not be able to continue with the trio activities, but his love for piano continued to push him to stay with the trio. For over twenty-five years, they performed all over the world and gave countless memorable concerts and produced many recordings. The Chung Trio gave its last concert in 1994, because each member's schedule did not permit them to work together often enough to maintain the standard that they demanded of themselves.
After ten years and for the first time, the Chung Trio will perform in Japan this year. They will play for you and our mother, who is 86 years old and has been the driving force and spirit for us, and pray that you will view them not only as accomplished musicians but also as a family who wishes to send a message to everyone that we can all become a little bit closer through music.
